Maintaining healthy waterways is the mission of Virginiaʼs Hampton Roads Sanitation District HRSD, a political subdivision of the commonwealth responsible for wastewater treatment across nearly 5,000 square miles around Chesapeake Bay. HRSD protects public health and the aquatic environment for 20 cities and counties, nearly 2 million residents, the region's multimillion-dollar tourism and oyster farming industries, and the worldʼs largest naval station, Naval Station Norfolk.
